iPhone-to-iPhone messenger apps

by michael

There is always a place for another messenger app, aside from the one that runs in various platforms, there are also a few that are meant just for the iPhone. These are the ones I know that is used by more people than the rest.

  1. Ping! (paid version) – $1 & Ping! Lite (free ad-supported)
  2. MessageNow – Free
  3. WhatsApp Messenger – $1
  4. Blipr – $1

Both Ping! and MessageNow are similar, you just need to pick a unique screen name and start sharing it with others. Both also has a buddy list and able to link to contacts. Ping! has another feature that is available as an in-app purchase for another $1, that is for you to be able to send pictures to other Ping! users, the good news is that at the receiving end, it doesn’t need the purchase to be able to receive it. Regarding the UI, MessageNow sticks to a clean and bright design, whereas Ping! uses more of the dark colour.  If you are fond of customizations, MessageNow able to customize personal message tone and backgrounds.

WhatsApp uses your own mobile phone number to identify its users and (as of this writing) it is not yet supported in Indonesia and India. It also supports sending videos, pictures and voice notes without additional cost. WhatsApp Messenger is currently being developed for blackberry as well, so this app will work between the two platforms once available.

Blipr is the strange one, it adopts blackberry’s PIN for a start, but luckily you are able to copy the pin without the need of memorizing it. It includes over 100 sounds to play with but that’s about it.

Let us know which one works best for you.
