So the iPhone 4 was announced

by michael

As expected, Apple announced the next generation iPhone, named iPhone 4 during the WWDC 2010 event. With all the recent articles floating around about leaked iPhone pictures and regarding the “lost” iPhone, finally, this is the real deal.

iPhone 4

As comparison, I would like to say that Nokia E52 is one of the thinnest smartphone (measured at 9.9mm) packed with lots of features and with the space mostly taken by its battery, one can only imagine how to fit all those technology in that tight space, but Apple prove that they can do better. With just at 9.3mm, Apple able to fit it with what most users have wanted, not only resulted in amazing design, but also a much more powerful iPhone.

First of all, the display, Apple boast the new display in iPhone 4, named retina display, with a high pixel density that eyes can’t really differentiate individual pixels anymore. Text, images and videos will look stunning on it, with resolution 960 x 640 @ 326 pixel per inch, it is definitely going to be an amazing display.

The iPhone now has 2 cameras, one at the front (VGA capable) and 5 megapixel camera with LED flash at the back together with the backside advanced design that help to illuminate the sensor for better low light photo taking. It is also capable of HD (720p) video recording. The front camera, however, can only be use for video call between iPhone 4 using wireless connection (for now), which Apple called it, FaceTime and wish to be an open standard for video call in the future. For those who often use video call over 3G mobile network will be greatly disappointed.

It will use iPhone OS 4 which adds multitasking, folders and more than hundreds new features and thousands new API, and being used in another i-device named iPad, Apple decided to change its name to iOS 4. With multitasking and folders getting most of the attention, hopefully people would agree that Apple get it right. Other feature I would like to know more is the in-app SMS feature, it is not promoted during the introduction of iOS 4 or WWDC keynote (perhaps nobody uses SMS anymore), whether we are able to reply incoming SMSs from any apps or is it just a sharing capability via SMS in third party applications.

Here is the specification of iPhone 4 that are worth mentioning:

  • a new Apple A4 processor
  • retina display (960 x 640 @326ppi)
  • 5 megapixel camera with HD 720 video recording and front camera (VGA)
  • improved battery life (7 hours of 3G talk time and 10 hours of WiFi browsing)
  • dual mic for better voice call quality
  • iOS 4
  • 9.3mm in thickness

Pre-order starts on the 15th of June in America and the product launch date is on the 24th of June, along with 5 other countries. I am waiting to get my hands on an unlocked version, available in Singapore and Australia, hopefully as scheduled end of July. Are you excited? You should be.
